I think the messaging from the regime has been a massive mistake. People were more or less fine with the rules as they were, you be a good goy and followed societies rules and you would be rewarded with a middle class lifestyle at minimum. Renigging on that promise and saying everyone should have known better is going to tank their legitimacy to zero, and its barely holding on now. The propaganda isnt even working anymore.
