Matt McIrvin@sangster @ajsadauskas @mekkaokereke the 13th Amendment banning slavery had a loophole big enough to drive a truck through, which was an explicit exception for convicts. Exploitation of this became normalized almost immediately, not just in the former Confederacy, and it can even get framed as "rehabilitation".
