    My favorite escalation after I pointed out the absurdity of this: "well what if one of those criminals murders someone to steal their wallet? Should we just let that go?"

    My dude, that's not petty theft anymore. It's felony murder. And yes, we should still fix the system. "They might escalate to murder" is such a ludicrous excuse to over prosecute petty theft.
