     @markvonwahlde very little is, but putting more people in the system for minor offences is definitely not a good solution to any problem (except the carceral-industrial system generating more profits for the rich).

     My favorite escalation after I pointed out the absurdity of this: "well what if one of those criminals murders someone to steal their wallet? Should we just let that go?"

     My dude, that's not petty theft anymore. It's felony murder. And yes, we should still fix the system. "They might escalate to murder" is such a ludicrous excuse to over prosecute petty theft.
