of course just because you write a book doesn't make it right or smart. but its the content of those books and your interpretation that matters.
As for what is 'common sense', much of this has been dictated by religion and philosophy. The catholic church, which had a total grip over Europe west of poland-ish for 1500 years and still even further, were all heavily influenced by Aristotle. Many of these people influenced by Aristotle became 'philosophers' in the own right, Aquinas, Augustine, etc
This people would influence the morality of Religion, and these things would stick.
What you call 'common sense' is in fact a product of philosophy.
