Apropos of nothing, I’m always struck by the opening to the first story in The King in Yellow, The Repairer of Reputations.
It speaks (positively) of American racism, a conquering and expansionist Russia, a strong (almost dictatorial) American president, casual and rising antisemitism, and strong xenophobia and anti-immigrant feelings. It was written in 1899, and seemed so quaint when I first read it, long before 2016…
