The older Imprezas are better too. No permanent cellphone tracking modem. Mechanical limited slipping differentials (versus more dependence on electronic traction control). I've never bought a new car myself. I thought about one recently, but I cannot deal with the permanent cell tracking that the dealership will not remove. The first step in buying a new car today (if you care about privacy) is pulling apart the entire dash and installing an aftermarket bypass harness (you can't just pull the fuse, the tracking unit is intentionally required for bluetooth and one of the two front speakers, for almost every manufacturer).
Subaru went hard into the larger wagons/suv-crossovers in the 2010s. You can blame them, but they did sell better. I guess it's what people want? The Impreza is pretty much the only thing you can get in the classic smaller style (maybe the Crosstrek, if you're a lesbian). The WRX hatch/wagon keeps getting discontinued and brought back. I think it's currently discontinued?
I just put in new wheels and lights on my 06 WRX and I intend to keep it until I can no longer buy parts for it.
