As seemingly the only inhabitants of Middle‐Earth who perform any labour, they represent what the aristocratic construction of its histories must, by design and not oversight, elide: the working class that is absent in gentry‐only Shire and in Eriador depopulated by war and plague. In the orcs, the evils of industrial modernity, which Tolkien’s thematic opposes with idyllic agrarian life in the hobbits and romantic celebrations of nature in the elves, are transposed onto the bodies of its victims: industrial workers and the working‐class soldiers serving and dying in the World War which gave Tolkien the prototype of Morgoth, Sauron, and Saruman’s war machines.</a></label><br><a href="https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/normal-media/media_attachments/files/113/669/219/840/664/460/original/6bf244cf61f9381c.png" rel="external">https://s3.us-west-1.wasabisys.com/normal-media/media_attachments/files/113/669/219/840/664/460/original/6bf244cf61f9381c.png</a></li></ol></footer></blockquote>
