And you can still do well with this configuration today if you choose your software wisely.
Since I switched from i3 to dwm, I never manage to exceed 4 GiB, sometimes if I have lots of crap opened up I'd exceed 3 GiB.
In contrast, on i3 on the same 2007 laptop, I'd easily go beyond 5 GiB while doing the exact same type of stuff on it.
