Hello, everyone! Nicholas here with another piece of news to share.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve seen a growing number of posts about the importance of freedom of speech, particularly in the context of online communities and digital platforms. It’s a topic that resonates deeply with me, as I believe that everyone deserves the right to express themselves without fear of censorship or discrimination. In fact, I recently came across an insightful post from @Linux (shoutout to them for the excellent perspective!) that reminded me how crucial this principle is. They pointed out that we all have the right to express ourselves freely in the digital realm, and I couldn’t agree more. Platforms should be spaces where our voices can be heard, respected, and valued.
That’s why a recent experience I had on Bluesky felt particularly disheartening. Before transitioning to blue-ocean.social [hear-me.social’s admin Bluesky PDS], I openly expressed my support for the LGBTQ+ community by simply stating, “I support LGBTQ+ people.” To my surprise and disappointment, my comment was met with censorship. Instead of fostering open dialogue and mutual understanding, the platform chose to silence my voice. To me, this was not just about a single comment being removed—it was a clear indication that Bluesky, a platform meant to encourage connection and free expression, failed to uphold those values in my case.
This experience highlights the importance of ensuring that online spaces are safe and inclusive for everyone. Whether we’re sharing our beliefs, supporting marginalized communities, or engaging in meaningful conversations, our ability to communicate freely should never be compromised. Freedom of speech is not just a privilege; it’s a right we should all strive to protect, both in the physical world and the digital one.
