@holeinthehead2 There's the GOP's virulent anti-intellectualism, going back at least to Ronnie Raygun and his CIA handler Papa-Bush. Then there's the end of the fairness doctrine, which opened the door for polititainment. Then there's the "profitable platforming" effect: Man on the street interviews are cheaper than real reporting and just as good or better for ratings...thus for ad sales.
