@mvexel If you're in the "Discover" feed, the "Discover" algo still doesn't know you so it'll show random things. At least that's how it was explained by someone.
What you see from the "public" (local + federated in the fediverse network) depends on the feed you are using, as that's where the algorithms are.
For example, I have a Feed called "Filipino 🇵🇭 Philippines". It is based on a userlist of Filipinos I'm maintaining + keywords (RegEx) related to the Philippines. It also only shows original posts (no replies & quote posts), plus, I'm filtering out NSFW based on the default Bluesky moderation algo + my own RegEx-based filters to make it usable for the everyone.
Combined, that's the algorithm of the "Filipino 🇵🇭 Philippines" feed.
Other users can subscribe to it, and pin it as a tab so they can easily switch to it. Or, rearrange their penned feeds so it is the default instead of "Discover", up to them.
If they want to change the algo, users can fork it.
There are a lot of topics discussed on The ATmosphere network that are not shown in the "Discover" feed. One can fork it too and create their own "Discover" feed algorithm to suit it to their preferences.
Basically, per my experience, you won't see the topics you like unless (1) you follow the right people and Feeds where those you follow are included in its algorithm; and (2) use the right Feeds for you.
It's why you'll see people with a very high Following count but very low Followers. Those usually are the ones with who created their own feed that is based on their Following. They use their own algorithms to only see the content they want from the people they're Following, instead of seeing everything.
