It doesn’t seem that a great alternative has appeared and I hate to miss out on finding new people, art and ideas, but staying on the site that burnishes Musk and his toxicity is no longer viable for me. I’m curious if you intend to remain, and if so, how do you rationalize that decision?Molly White ·Author·6 days ago It’s been a tough call and it’s something I re-evaluate pretty regularly. Twitter is one of around three platforms I use in roughly equal amounts (alongside Mastodon and Bluesky), and these days is mostly just a destination for my POSSE-d posts. For me, the decision to stay has mostly hinged on the fact that it more feels more impactful to continue to be a voice against the madness there than it would be to leave. You can argue that my presence benefits Musk and his cronies in some way (I don’t pay for Twitter or directly support the company in any way — the blue check is foisted upon me and not paid for — but certainly using the platform does supply some amount of ad revenue), but it also allows me to be a continued thorn in their sides.
https://media.hachyderm.io/media_attachments/files/113/487/634/065/061/243/original/49568d77ad325318.png

There’s also the fact that much of what happens in the crypto world plays out on Twitter, so even if I stopped posting there, I would likely need to continue to use the site in order to keep up on my reporting. One could certainly argue I should stop using Twitter completely, and who cares if I miss something in the crypto world, but turning a blind eye to things that are only going to become more important to follow in the coming years feels like the decidedly wrong choice to me.As for alternatives, I do recommend both Mastodon and Bluesky. They’re very different, and your experience on both will differ depending on which corners of the platforms you wind up in, but I find them to be lovely and joyful places — certainly in comparison to Twitter. Then there’s RSS, which is more of a one-way street, but brings me a lot of joy and is one of the primary ways I find good writing and smart people online these days.
https://media.hachyderm.io/media_attachments/files/113/487/636/377/143/445/original/0d04d1a40bc4affd.png
