A picture is worth a thousand words and it's cool to see art showing things rather than simply reading. Some early Christians got pissed and saw it as idol worship even though no Christian actually believes the icon is the source of the "power" of Christ. Bowing your head or kissing an icon is like paying respects to a king, but some saw that as worshipping a painting.
