- Embed this noticeYou have "right" in "property" and you have to pay "fees" to the "lord" (county or state). If you don't, the land reverts to the original grantor, the state who then sells it to another (you're replaced as lord of the land — landlord).
While the idea of a fee came late in feudalism as for commoners (when land also became inheritable), lords owed fees (or duties) to the king (their manors had to produce or that had to provide warriors, etc.) and they had "titles" which determined their relationship and obligation to the crown.
While the specific rights and duties my have been modified over time, it's still feudal at base.
