When I was a tipi dweller I started making furniture out of twigs and logs found in the woods nearby. They don’t require many tools - a pruning saw, sharp knife, a drill with some forstner bits, &amp; an orbital sander if you want to make them smooth. I’d also do a lot of hand sanding &amp; rubbing tung oil in for a finish. Pretty standard willow chair design, easily made into a rocker. They can vary quite a bit if you’ve the imagination &amp; time, I’ll show some from a master in another post. When I started, my tipi was down by the river next to a shed, which is where I would work. Eventually when I built Mud Manor in Colorado I would build things in the living room, until I added on some shop space. I was a lousy salesman/marketer and gave several away just to make room for more, but I did sell enough to keep me off food stamps.There are lots of kinds of willows, some bend easier than others. These were gathered along irrigation ditches, which the ranchers didn’t mind. They peel easily if you get them early in the summer, or you can leave the bark on, which is initially green, but turns red with age. You can use anything for the frame, I like the looks of the red birch. The frames are just screwed together with sheetrock screws of appropriate length, &amp; the willow nailed on with panel nails. pre-drill the holes before nailing. Finish these with a few coats of thinned linseed oil.</a></label><br><a href="https://files.toad.social/media_attachments/files/110/353/240/079/822/417/original/122b428ca3a06815.png" rel="external">https://files.toad.social/media_attachments/files/110/353/240/079/822/417/original/122b428ca3a06815.png</a></li><li><label><a rel="external" href="https://gnusocial.jp/attachment/3287244">A peeled aspen &amp; mountain maple bed against a red wall, with a matching side table to the right and a spotting scope to the left, because out the window were birds in the aspen trees, and beyond was the Teton Range. This was in my apartment in Moose, WY when I worked there. I’d built the bed during the tipi days many years before. The aspen was downfall, but fairly recent, so it hadn’t stained much yet. Green aspen is difficult to peel. The Mountain Maple is a small, shruby tree that grows in riparian areas at a certain altitude in the mountains, best if it is cut in the spring/early summer to peel easier. You need forstner bits to drill the holes (mortises) for the tenons for this type construction. There are tenon cutters you can get for a brace type drill, but I preferred to whittle them with a knife, using a chisel to rough out the size first. Tenons are glued in the mortise &amp; secured with a discreetly placed screw. Lots of sanding &amp; hand rubbing oil for the finish. The platform is just 2x6 rails with a special clamp that locks the to the posts. Across the rails are 2x6 sanded boards to support the mattress. If you are using a box spring you just need a ledger on the bottom inside of the rails.</a></label><br><a href="https://files.toad.social/media_attachments/files/110/353/247/822/006/998/original/effa7134339519a4.jpeg" rel="external">https://files.toad.social/media_attachments/files/110/353/247/822/006/998/original/effa7134339519a4.jpeg</a></li><li><label><a rel="external" href="https://gnusocial.jp/attachment/3287245">This silly thing I made for my mom’s sunroom. It is an inverted crotch of peeled Mountain Maple with a few added pieces to make a 2 level table built into one side, a backrest, front leg, &amp; there is a rawhide covered lamp in the upper crotch. The seat is upholstered with black leather. I liked to find downed trees in the woods and figure out how to make something without having to add much, let the chair make itself. It would require lots of wandering in the woods to find the right piece. The back piece is a root of the tree that had been exposed in a road cut. There is a rock on the right side that the root grew around, claiming it as its own. The root took quite a bit of cleaning and sanding to get the look I wanted. Time well spent.
Unfortunately I had placed it on consignment in a Jackson, WY gallery, which went belly up. The owner absconded with the chair. I informed the sheriff, but nothing came of it.I hope whoever has it enjoys it as much as I would have.
I’m not particularly talented or gifted with any of this d.i.y. stuff, but it does take time. Time not spent on internet devices, time not spent making what John Fire Lame Deer called ‘green frog skins’, just to spend them on things to fill the void left by a disconnect with nature.
