@Deplorable_Degenerate @graf @Humpleupagus @ForbiddenDreamer Before Joker even came out, Joe-quin and Phillips kept stressing that this isn't a "universe" thing, they just wanted to make a self-contained movie and they didn't intend a sequel. I think if you don't want to make a sequel, you can make something like this, sell it to the studio as extremely bold, then blame the public for not wanting to see it.
