i had that belief a year ago, but for once i now have to agree with @Suiseiseki that any proprietary (especially closed-source) software is actively harmful to computing. the average layman treats their computer like a black box, and software engineering is an undervalued profession because it isn't fully out in the open how good, stable code requires active discipline and plenty of peer review. the problem is magnified by the sheer volume of new tech in the last decade alone, so it's become a race to undo the damage of proprietary BS and go forward with proper ethics
