@lulu I used to think this was false until I saw someone in my own family going down this track as they aged.

They've gotten tired, bitter and overwhelmed and are now more easily swayed by this sort of manipulation which is alarming because they used to have solid critical thinking just a few years ago.

Of course this is only one data point so it doesn't say how common this is but it does show that it can and does happen.
