I always check my right when turning for bicycles (I've be turned into once; and the driver clearly saw me because she passed me and then turned into me, and I've been car-doored once too).

But in this case, the moto was passing on the fucking shoulder. No sympathy for this moron. Avoid passing on the right (or left in AU/JP/GB/NZ) and never drive in the shoulder. Shoulders are for stopping ... maybe turning.
