@TerminalAutism @Alex @xianc78 Speaking of which, in Gen 8 I tried the Battle Tower, but the fucking annoying thing here is that for whatever reason it permanently screws up the moveset of my Mew every single time I try it, so I gave up on that one.

But I agree, Gen 2 was way too easy.
Only that ice cave was fucking annoying back in the day, but somehow I had an easier time with that one in the remake, like if they made it easier to solve.

And the cave with the mandatory HM5 move really felt like it's only there for the sake of being there, served no purpose at all.
You might argue about the whole Anon part as well, but at least that one got you to catch a Pokemon and its 26 varieties you'd not find anywhere else in the game.
