The "yoyo" happens despite "doing everything right" because without visibility into results you can have many days going in the wrong direction, until you measure and overcorrect for a few days, then fall back into the wrong direction. Once I could ensure that, I just had to do simple substitutions, until the direction was steadily downwards.
