The master took the students to a mountain ledge overlooking a valley and asked the students if they wished to jump off. One student replied that he could not fly, as he knows he is neither a bird nor dragon (龍). Next the master took the students to a cave where they spotted a sleeping bear (熊). The master instructed the students to attempt to climb upon the bear. One student refused and the other, not wishing to appear foolish, began to climb upon the bears back before it awoke and chased them off. The master turned to the student who had awoken the bear and chastised him saying he has neither knowledge (知识) nor wisdom (智慧) and would be unable to gain either while pride (骄傲 ) clouds his judgement.
