@tillshadeisgone to put it differently, if I were the project manager of everything, I'd allocate something like 20% of "resources" - be it money for bounties, or developers, or time - to fix mastodon while the rest goes towards the new project(s).
This way there's a realistic chance to fix mastodon sooner, and if that doesn't work you still have the hard fork - which is *not* going to take less time than fixing mastodon.
