A lot of people use a large black plastic container or rain barrel or fish tank painted black. It's sort of like how a Keurig or fishtank will grow algae in the tank it if it has sunlight near it. Soil would be easier, I'm sure, but less chance of mess if I mount it high and use hydro (I'm probably very wrong). Certainly less space.
