I remember listening to a talk on seismic monitoring stations in Wellington, just a few weeks after a smaller earth quake. It's interesting, but it's not really preventative. By the time you register something it's kinda too late. A lot of the preventative work has already been done, like the isolaters under the Bee Hive, Parliament, Te Papa and many other buildings.
