It wasn't analogous to America where Christians are a large minority in a nominally secular country. They were a theocracy of people with a covenant who fell away repeatedly and were punished accordingly. Imagine if the Amish suddenly had a huge oppressive issue hit them for their apostasy and you have an accurate analogy.
