If someone excludes talented people from a community by being a bigoted bigoted fucker (or even an abuser), you should worry about how good the project will run. For example, Numberscanbefun, who made a video detailing the story of Sharkey as a project,, has told how the devs had to deal with the bugginess of Transbox because of how transphobic the dev community in the upstream Soapbox was.
There's still many projects that will work out fine despite this. Still, people shouldn't have to worry about what devs are saying outside of the project itself. They should be confident that their communities will support their contributions to a project despite their identity.
