Oregon trail people were stocked up and most tried to have what they needed, likely traveling with a group of others by wagon who could swap parts and cover for each other's lacks. Trail of tears was Indians already isolated (largely by mutual choice I think), time of year, etc. If it hasn't been such a hurried march they'd have likely done better.
