.Older people don't have to be treated like children or be "sweet".
This is a particular pet peeve of mine, this infantilization of the elderly. I think the idea is to be comforting, but it's often insulting. My dad is blind, not a child.
It was the worst with my father-in-law. He was easily the smartest person I've ever known. Turned down a Rhodes scholarship when he was young. Intimidatingly smart. And to see hospital staff baby talk him was tremendously upsetting.
Treat the elderly like adults, please. It's a dignity thing.
