But absent some kind of enforced monopoly like patents or public contracts they usually immediately get attacked by competition and get driven down to what are called "normal profits." Which are usually the opportunity cost for the people in that business.
There are a few industries which are weird in that respect, like art, but for the most part direct competition is possible.
