13 barn owls in a trenchcoat@phocks Although it's the second book, a lot of people do best by starting with The Player of Games, rather than Consider Phlebas (not because the former isn't great - it's one of my favourites, but it's a slightly uncharacteristic Culture novel and doesn't explain much about the setting at first).
