One feature Mastodon does better than virtually every other platform is the edit button. It's free, has unlimited edits, is not time limited, has edit history, edit notifications, real-time updates, and is generally just awesome. As someone who does a LOT of typos, and constantly forgets alt text etc, I am eternally grateful to the Mastodon Devs for such a flawless implementation.
Regardless of what happens in 2025 I still think it's pretty darn cool that we can do social media free from corporate control if we want to. It feels like this is the way the web was meant to be this whole time. Who's with me?
It doesn't happen so much since being off Twitter but occasionally someone on here will still ask me for tips, advice, or information about going vegan, for the animals, or their health, or the environmnt, and it actually really makes my day every time. Anyway if you've ever thought about the possibility of trying to reduce your animal product intake, then right now is actually the perfect time to sign up for Veganuary, to challenge yourself for a month, and stay motivated with a new year's resolution. Otherwise, if this year's not the year for you, why not tell a friend. Thanks 🙏 https://veganuary.com
The other day @josh asked me about a self-hosted URL shortener / Link expander and I didn't really have any experience in that area, but it got me thinking, what is the simplest way to build something like this. Anyway, here's my first try.
Between 2009 and 2012, iPhones had a built-in "Send to YouTube" button in the Photos app. Many of these uploads kept their default IMG_XXXX filenames, creating a time capsule of raw, unedited moments from random lives.
Inspired by Ben Wallace, I made a bot that crawled YouTube and found 5 million of these videos! Watch them below, ordered randomly.
I don't get this social media age ban thing like kids aren't just gonna push the "yes I'm over the required age" button on the app anyway like I did as a kid. It's not hard. I turned out fine hahahlsjd
The Onion promotes itself as "the world's leading news publication, offering highly acclaimed, universally revered coverage of breaking national, international, and local news events".
OK so I guess I'm going to keep doing these because it's pretty fun. I've found the script that loads the paywall for The Washington Post. Simply block `washingtonpost.com/subscribe/static/tetro-client/fusion/tetro.min.js` with your favourite URL blocking extension (I use AdNauseum) and the paywall doesn't show up. For educational & research purposes only. Please remember to support journalism if you're able to. Have fun! https://www.washingtonpost.com
Forget Spotify. I have discovered the pinnacle of music discovery. Purchase a bunch of old MiniDiscs online and see what you get. Currently listening to Mr Bombastic by Shaggy. So good. 💽
Seeing as Vercel started trying to charge me for blob storage on my photoblog I was looking for alternative solutions to keep posting some happy snaps from this old Fujifilm camera I got a little while ago. Couldn't really find any other options, so I figured why not try self-hosting a Pixelfed instance? The installation seems a little involved, but let's try it. First step, get PHP-FPM going on NGINX https://pixel.byrd.ws/info.php
