For a long time "everyone knew" that witches caused crop failures, and for awhile "everyone knew" that the sun orbited the earth, or that planets orbited the sun in perfect circles. Or that magnets and light are two different things. Or that horoscopes are how to predict the future. Or that homeopathy works.
