When you're White you can overcome half your people being dumber compared to the rest, but when you're one of the handful of smart blacks you're not going to be dragging that undertow anywhere. (And even if you did accomplish something you'd just be rewarded with Even More Undertow).
That's not to say that I want them here, I don't.
