It's the kind of movie that really turns your imagination against you and makes the unseen horror the scariest of all. It also taps into that primal fear of being lost in the woods, and unwittingly wandering further and further down the path to your doom.
On a somewhat related note, I watched another, very different horror movie called The Witch a whole ago. While good and well-made, I have to say that the times it actually *showed* the titular Witch were usually among the LEAST scary parts. Definitely made me appreciate BWP's approach even more.
