The reason why most of them switch to the SSPL/BSL type licenses because they in particular are often utilized by the big "cloud" providers such as AWS, Azure, GCP, etc.
In theory they could make more money this way because this type of license forces these parties in particular to pay up.
But that's a fantasy, what happens in reality is that Amazon and Google will just drop them and start using a fork instead. Meanwhile they have also fucked up their regular userbase by making their software nonfree and they also fuck over distro maintainers that can't implement their software anymore.
All of it in an attempt to make a little bit more money.
