I didn't put it together until maybe ten years ago, I wiped some sweat from my forehead and my eyes started burning like I'd gotten hot sauce in them, I realize it's probably in my skin oil, I run out of the office demanding that she come over and lick my forehead (this was abrupt so it took some convincing). Mystery solved: summer rolls around, the animals get covered in fleas, I don't notice because the fleas don't touch me, but they're eating the lady alive, diet is nearly identical other than the excessive amount of hot sauce, I get her to start eating the stuff consistently, the bugs start to ignore her. All the really strong peppers come from malaria-infested jungles, and this is both sides of the world: Central/South America, Southeast Asia and Africa. I don't know of any serious studies, but it at least stands to reason, and I have anecdotal evidence.
