eh i find that exonyms and endonyms are the purview of governments and media institutions; related somewhat to their efforts to control/standardize language, not really of much interest to me, as long as someone can understand what you mean then that's alright
for example one day Germany in a justified anti-French crusade decides to mandate everyone call Cologne "Köln". everyone will still recognize it if you use Cologne but then there might be connotations of Germophobia or even worse, you will be recognized as a Francophile! but depending on the pervading sentiment and time eventually either things will stick or they won't, that's how language over time develops after all
