@sickburnbro Some years ago, there was a documentary about the American railroad system's history.

There was a portion where their mentioned that train cars were coupled by hand in a dangerous process that would maim or kill rail workers. An automatic coupler was created, but the rail companies never implemented it for years because it was far cheaper to let rail workers keep getting killed and crippled.

This should sound very similar to what's going on here.
