Jews deliberately misinterpret the lex talionis of Exodus 21:23-24 and Leviticus 24:19–21 to get back at anyone for any petty reason, hence Christ correcting the Sanhedrin's misuse of the lex talionis in the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:38, rather than what is often assumed to be Him overriding it
