Thought I'd share how my personal viewing of the meme contrasts with the analysis above:
1. I thought the art was lazy and the character design is kind of uncanny valley - I felt a combination of being bored and unsettled.
2. While the message says they're an adult I didn't feel belittled by it. The character is talking about itself and I am an observer rather than the one being talked down to.
3. I am not familiar with the original script, this is the first I hear of that variation.
4. I don't know this guy so he's automatically flagged as neutral-unsafe, not to mention the uncanny valley design. This does makes me wonder if I'd react more positively if the maker had used a known and less unsettling character.
5. This one highlights the possibility that the reason it's failing with me might have more to do with me as a person than cultural differences. :blobcatgooglyshrug:
Still, I'd argue that if a professional has made this meme with a specific manipulative intent then their cultural target was also hyper specific and would likely and knowingly fail with other subcultures within the same target area.
