That's a fair point, have brought that up myself on the Masto github, but that's purely for the software developers, none of that goes to people who run servers.
Also, because of the way Mastodon and Fedi software is licensed, if someone did do something nasty (which I haven't seen any signs of) there are other versions of the software servers can switch to, or even totally different software made by different teams.
