     @feditips For the newbies, how do we find out servers' websites? Is it as simple as typing in mastodon.social in to a search engine or whatever? I'm on the webapp.

     Your server's website is the site you signed up on. If you don't remember, look at the address on your profile page, it's underneath your name (looks like @ user @ server).

     The last part of your address is your server's website.

     So, for example, looking at your profile I can see you're on https://mstdn.social

     There might be individuals using cryptocurrency, but it's not part of how the Fediverse runs and the general mood on here is very much anti-cryptocurrency and anti-blockchain.

     I've never seen any Fediverse server with ads, though a small number do have sponsors.

     @feditips That is a bit of a by instance thing. I have seen ads, cryptocurrency on PeerTube relatively frequently. I'm not sure if the ads on PeerTube are actually paying bills of the instances or not, I suspect not. But the Cryptocurrency is intentional. And... some instances are OK with federating with that content, others are not.

     That's a fair point, have brought that up myself on the Masto github, but that's purely for the software developers, none of that goes to people who run servers.

     Also, because of the way Mastodon and Fedi software is licensed, if someone did do something nasty (which I haven't seen any signs of) there are other versions of the software servers can switch to, or even totally different software made by different teams.

     The fact we could switch makes it less likely we would need to.

     @feditips What about corporate sponsors? I'm a bit uneasy about gambling companies and the like funding things and having access to developers. How is their influence monitored?

     Each user has a unique address that includes the server name, so if you change servers your address changes too.

     But there's a way to move your account to another server so that you keep your followers and follows, and they will automatically switch to your new address.

     That's not true, there's very strong moderation within instances and between them.

     If an instance owner starts doing awful stuff, the other instances will block them. The worst instances will end up completely isolated.

     @feditips There's also no moderation, so anyone can say any atrocity they want without consequences (to them) in their own instance.
