Sometimes you have to play "power level chicken" with people to get them to open up. I'll say something that's laden with dogwhistles and look for the way they respond. Sime people will make very weak apologetic responses for the regime position, because they're not used to being able to speak freely.

Sometimes that's all it takes for a person to relax and say what they mean.
