Kit Rhett Aultman@melissabeartrix @Tooden Florida was colonized from the north to the south, and there was originally an "old Florida" in the eastern side of the panhandle and a "new Florida" on the western side. Tallahassee was located to be more accessible to both halves. Miami really didn't start to take off until the early-mid 20th century. Miami was a capital of the cocaine trade, which meant a lot of crime. Cocaine is still wildly common down there, too. I know from experience.
