Some of them escaped, and letting prisoners escape was an act of treason and thus carried a death sentence. Since he had nothing left to lose at that point, he took the prisoners to a fort and started a bandit army, eventually convincing friends in nearby regions to join him in a rebellion, overthrowing the emperor, ending the Qin dynasty, and then, after getting shafted by his friend Xiang Yu when they divided China (he got the Chinese equivalent of Siberia), overthrowing his friend and becoming Emperor Gaozu, the founder of the Han Dynasty.
