Once you optimize stuff for cheap production, people are happy as long as they have a much better model to buy when stuff breaks.
And when you as a company have a lot of things to improve, it can work out, maybe .. but as soon as you stop having easy things to offer people, you get what we've had in a lot of things for the last like 20 years. What is the "big" thing in cars? a billion screens everywhere, integrations with phones that will fail to work in 10 years, etc.
It's kind of an industrial "eating the seed corn"
