@mattly my most charitable read is that people think they can trade the need to comprehend and reason and predict with the need to describe and be vigilant. But I don't know how to tell them just how much that is a terrible trade that is. Vigilance is completely unsustainable, even if it did save on up front cognitive work, which it doesn't. We still have to comprehend, reason, and predict, but now at a distance and without reliable ways to influence the outcome.
