Flight school has become insanely expensive over the last decade or so. from zero hours to your atp certification, you're looking at probably over 100k now. There are special scholarship funds set up for basically every minority in the US, black student pilots, black women, women, gay men, latinos, etc. But there's zero dollars out there for a White student pilot.
So even without airlines mandating diversity quotas, White males have been completely priced out of the field. White guys are basically forced to do an 8 year stint in the Air Force if they want a free pilots license. But you can't be an Air Force officer without a college degree so....
The other thing they don't tell you is that flight school is almost completely taught by the students. So a student with their commercial license but not enough hours for atp is doing the flights with the private pilot and instrument students. They do it this way because no one can afford to pay mature pilots to be instructors. The skill levels in the field would be decaying anyways just from economic reasons, if DEI initiatives were out of the picture completely.
(I can't speak personally about it, but I've heard its even more expensive in Europe)
